About the Name

At one time, the Cawston Ostrich Farm was the most popular tourist destination in South Pasadena. The ostriches are long gone, but you can still see an old ostrich feeder on the north wall of Meridian Iron Works. Go check it out the next time you're at the Farmer's Market or hopping on the Gold Line. Get a hold of me here.

The scariest thing this week is the swine flu outbreak in South Pas. Or at least that’s what knocked me down for a few days. I think. Maybe I was just sick. Police report after the jump. Tweet

Crime Report 07.22.09

A nightmare of mine is being asleep when the bad guys break in. Yikes. And here’s some words of wisdom: When the parking officer asks you to move your car, just move your car. Yelling and almost hitting the parking officer … you’re kind of asking for it. Full report after the jump. Tweet

Green Machine Gleanings

The city is hosting its Clean-Air Car Show and Green-Living Expo this Sunday, where you can look at fuel-efficient cars and stuff. And if you’re not into cars, or Earth, you can go catch Wall-E at the Rialto. But don’t forget, the Rialto was never a great theater for avoiding the heat. Here’s the pdf. [...]

Winslow, Arizona, Don’t Forget South Pas …

It’s always tempting to make the leap, but I usually pass on touting the various walking and biking tours of L.A. Making the connection to South Pasadena can be a stretch. But Franklin Avenue picked up on a cool-sounding tour that terminates right here at Fair Oaks Pharmacy. The Location Managers Guild of America (a [...]

Crime Report 07.15.09

Grover’s Corners had Simon Stimson, Mayberry had Otis Campbell, and South Pas has a rotating cast of wandering inebriates. Full report after the jump. Tweet

Crime Report 07.08.09

Prepare to be shocked: People were lighting fireworks in South Pas last week. The full (but brief) police report after the jump. Tweet

SPUSD Supe Search Update

Sorry, but this came when I was out enjoying the holiday weekend. The district has hired a headhunting firm to find a replacement for outgoing Superintendent Brian Bristol. There’s a public meeting tomorrow if you’d like to weigh in. Full e-mail after the jump. Tweet

Catching Up 07.08.09

South Pasadena’s Community Services Department has set up a Facebook page. The Pasadena Star-News congratulates South Pas for being oh-so eco-friendly. South Pas resident Aileen Sevajian, 49, gets three years for defrauding Glendale residents. Here’s some background on the case. Sure, our schools are in superintendent limbo, but the Lawndale School District has tapped Ellen [...]

Crime Report 07.01.09

Maybe I’ve seen too many movies, but whenever someone cuts a hole in the roof to get inside the Japanese restaurant, odds are the perp is a ninja. It’s worth a mention that there were a couple of robberies in South Pas last week: one at gunpoint and the other at knifepoint. Also, an impressive [...]
