About the Name

At one time, the Cawston Ostrich Farm was the most popular tourist destination in South Pasadena. The ostriches are long gone, but you can still see an old ostrich feeder on the north wall of Meridian Iron Works. Go check it out the next time you're at the Farmer's Market or hopping on the Gold Line. Get a hold of me here.

Local Kids Serenade Fullerton School Board

The ambiguously titled blog Friends for Fullerton’s Future reports that Fullerton School District Superintendent Mitch Hovey played this video at a recent school board meeting. The blog suggests it might have been used to float the idea of a parcel tax. One gem from the post: “Enjoy the manipulation of children by the same mindless [...]

Crime Report 02.24.10

There’s nothing much wrong with arresting people who drift through town selling phony magazine subscriptions and stuff, but arresting a kid for selling fruit on the corner? That sounds a little mean. Especially when the kid is about 2 feet away from Alhambra city limits. There’s also a report of an assault at SPHS that [...]

Figuring Out the B-2 Buzz

I’ve been wondering why, out of nowhere, people are flocking to an innocuous post from December 2008 about a stealth bomber flying over Pasadena. My best guess is it’s because they’re looking for this photo, which just won some kind of award. Let me know if you have a better hunch. Press release after the jump. [...]

Revised SR-710 Update Meeting Notice

It looks like they have some heavy hitters showing up. From the city: You are invited to attend an SR-710 Update Meeting hosted by the City of South Pasadena on Friday, Feb. 26, at the South Pasadena High School Auditorium. Registration will be from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Presentations will be followed by a question and answer period. [...]

Crime Report 02.17.10

Third week in a row that police arrested someone with an out-of-state ID for soliciting without a permit. Full police report after the jump. Tweet

Catching Up 02.16.10

A few of the South Pas-related items floating around in the news: In an obit for Frisbee inventor Walter Frederick Morrison, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune mentions in passing that WHAM-O began in a South Pasadena garage. Maybe you already knew that but, well, I didn’t. The L.A. Times says, “Today, Stargate (Studios) generates $15 [...]

Ostriches in 3D

Yeah, I’m a geek. I found this stereoscopic image of an ostrich farm in Cairo, Egypt, at yesterday’s Rose Bowl Flea Market. No relationship to the Cawston Ostrich Farm. As Rick Thomas notes in “South Pasadena’s Ostrich Farm” (which is part of Arcadia Publishing’s awesome “Images of America” series), Edwin Cawston actually figured out the [...]

Crime Report 02.14.10

Happy Valentine’s Day and all that. I guess my favorite would be the guy who stole a spatula from Bristol Farms, and then sped away in his BMW. Full report after the jump. Tweet

The Elephant in the Room: Joe Payne*

*Aug. 19, 2020 update: The headline to this post always bugged me, so I finally went ahead and changed it today. It says what I tried to say with the previous head, but it’s less open to (mis)interpretation. *Update: I wouldn’t normally add the asterisk for a comment, but it’s only fair to draw attention [...]
