As mentioned in this week’s crime report, there has been a rash of residential break-ins. The South Pas Police Department sent this out today:

Within the past several weeks we have seen a rise in residential burglaries. Last week there were three burglaries at apartment units in the 1600 and 1700 block of Raymond Hill. There was also a burglary in the 1400 block of Wayne. Yesterday afternoon there was another burglary at two homes in the 2000 block of Stratford. A witness saw the suspect knocking on the victim’s doors before gaining entry. The witness thought the suspect was a door to door solicitor. One of the victims returned home and saw the suspect walking down the driveway carrying two duffel bags and entering a gold or copper colored SUV. The suspect is described as a Hispanic, or light skinned, male, 25-30 years old, 506, stocky build, with curly black hair wearing a red baseball cap, button down shirt, and green baggy shorts.

It appears that a common method for burglars is to knock on doors and ask for a person (any name is used). Once the burglars know someone is home, they leave. If no one answers the door, they go to the rear of the house to look for a way in. Any opened or unlocked windows are easy entry points, but they have been using forced entry as well. The suspects ransack the house taking jewelry, cash and other valuables.

Please remember to lock all doors and windows and to lock up any valuables. Also, please report any suspicious persons and vehicles. Any door to door solicitor must have a city permit, be sure to always ask to see it. If the solicitor has no permit, call the police immediately.
