About the Name

At one time, the Cawston Ostrich Farm was the most popular tourist destination in South Pasadena. The ostriches are long gone, but you can still see an old ostrich feeder on the north wall of Meridian Iron Works. Go check it out the next time you're at the Farmer's Market or hopping on the Gold Line. Get a hold of me here.

ArcLight Announces Pasadena Plans

Not quite South Pasadena, but without the Rialto we have to venture outside city limits every once in a while. When it comes to movies, I gave up on the Alhambra Daycare & Texting Center a long time ago. Gold Class Cinemas at One Colorado sounds promising, but they still sell out really quick. So [...]

Catching Up 03.01.10

A few South Pas-centric stories floating around:

Sometimes there’s a fine line between news and advertising. Sometimes that line gets trampled.
The death of SPHS student Aydin Salek prompts a bill proposal from Assemblyman Anthony Portantino that would “grant immunity from criminal prosecution to teenagers who seek emergency medical attention for someone possibly suffering from alcohol poisoning.”
State Assemblyman Mike Eng [...]

Figuring Out the B-2 Buzz

I’ve been wondering why, out of nowhere, people are flocking to an innocuous post from December 2008 about a stealth bomber flying over Pasadena. My best guess is it’s because they’re looking for this photo, which just won some kind of award. Let me know if you have a better hunch. Press release after the jump.

South Pas on the Royal Court

The members of the 2010 Tournament of Roses Royal Court have been announced, and included is PCC student and South Pasadena resident Kinsey Stuart (second from left). From the release:
Kinsey Elizabeth Stuart, 18, resides in South Pasadena and is studying psychology in her first year at Pasadena City College (PCC). In high school she was [...]

Inside Private Lives extends its run at the Fremont Centre Theatre, which pushes the production past the one-year mark in South Pas.
Pasadena Unified School District might try and follow South Pasadena’s lead and push for a parcel tax. The district is facing a $14 million deficit. The question is whether a city as large and [...]

Pasadena Humane Society Chock Full

The Pasadena Humane Society, which serves seven cities including South Pasadena, is filled to capacity. If you’ve been thinking about adopting a dog, and don’t plan on using the economy as an excuse to abandon it after you get bored, take the time to swing by the shelter.

Shannon Tapped for Museum Director

South Pasadena resident Jenkins Shannon has been named the new director for the Pasadena Museum of California Art. She takes the place of Christopher Mount, who was ousted after only seven months at the helm.

Big Ol’ Catching Up

A lot of this will be outdated, but …

City Water Manager Marcelino Aguilar says of the Wilson Reservoir: “It’s about 100 years old. The life expectancy is supposed to be about 50 years.”
Trader Joe’s is suing a New York store that’s decided to reopen as Trader John’s.
Drilling began, in a testing phase, for the 710 [...]

Wolverines!

If you noticed that Stealth Bomber flying over Pasadena yesterday, and started imagining all kinds of “Red Dawn” scenarios, you can rest easy. Yesterday was the memorial service for Verne Orr.

South Pas Adjacent

Here’s a quick roundup of some stuff going on in not-quite South Pasadena:

Two weeks after an architect unsuccessfully lobbied Alhambra’s Planning Commission for more bedrooms in a condo project, the place burned to the ground.
A week or so after Maureen Dowd reminded us that Pasadena Now reports from India, the L.A. Times’ James Rainey talks [...]
