About the Name

At one time, the Cawston Ostrich Farm was the most popular tourist destination in South Pasadena. The ostriches are long gone, but you can still see an old ostrich feeder on the north wall of Meridian Iron Works. Go check it out the next time you're at the Farmer's Market or hopping on the Gold Line. Get a hold of me here.

eHarmony to Pasadena: It’s Not You, It’s Me

eHarmony is moving it’s corporate headquarters from Pasadena to Santa Monica. According to the Star-News, Pasadena tried to get the online dating site to stay, but eHarmony declined. South Pas resident Taylor Gershman writes:
Are you aware that eHarmony is moving its headquarters and 250+ workforce to Santa Monica in November? The reason is some of [...]

Book’em Mysteries Sale This Weekend

We’re lucky to have an independent bookstore in town, let alone Book’em Mysteries. This weekend they’ll have their annual overstock sale. Per their site, “All new books 30% off, ARCs and galleys 2 and 5 dollars as marked. Plus we have a new selection of 50% hardcovers.” It’s worth the visit. While we’re at it, [...]

Catching Up 06.10.10

Time for the occasional roundup. It’s after the jump.

Change of Venue for Chief’s Shindig*

The ever-vigilant Mister Earl tipped me off to the change of venue. Via his email:
It has now been moved to the War Memorial building due to some sentiment that it should be held within the city. This, which appeared in the Star-News today, apparently fueled the fire:
“Maybe it wasn’t their brand of sauce, but South [...]

A Smattering of Job Listings

Stuff to Do

SATURDAY
SOPA Studios is having an artists’ reception Saturday from 7 to 9:30 p.m.
Also, Ken Kulhken will be at BOOK’em Mysteries on Saturday at 3 p.m. to sign copies of “The Biggest Liar in Los Angeles.” What it’s about:

In 1926, when musician Tom Hickey reads in a broadside about a lynching the Los Angeles newspapers failed [...]

Out of Office

I’ll be away from the computer for the next couple weeks. Here are a few nuggets to pass the time:

The Highland Park Heritage Trust is asking Caltrans to stop all that construction on the 110.
The Eclectic Music Festival & Art Walk will have oh-so-hip food trucks. Phew. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like [...]

Taking Care of Business

A lot of this is pretty stale, but it’s worth a glance. If you haven’t noticed, South Pas is abuzz with new business. Glimpses of South Pasadena gave a great roundup here, and here’s a few other biz notes of note:

First and foremost, Eating L.A. has the scoop on Mix ’n Munch. Two thoughts on this: [...]

South Pas Blogs Goes Dark

This is a bummer. Not that much of a surprise, since the last post was in June, but still …
As the datelines of the most recent entries attest, it’s been some time since I’ve posted anything on South Pas Blogs. The demands of life have relegated this website to the back burner for a while [...]

Chamber Clears Farmers Market Hurdle

The South Pas Chamber of Commerce posted on their blog today that they’ve “made the first cut in the contest to run the local Farmers’ Market.” I asked Scott Feldmann a few questions about the Chamber’s interest in the market, and he was kind enough to humor me. Q&A after the jump.
