About the Name

At one time, the Cawston Ostrich Farm was the most popular tourist destination in South Pasadena. The ostriches are long gone, but you can still see an old ostrich feeder on the north wall of Meridian Iron Works. Go check it out the next time you're at the Farmer's Market or hopping on the Gold Line. Get a hold of me here.

In Their Own Words: Joseph Payne and Mike Ten

Because I think they warrant it, I’m reposting a couple of comments from recent posts. I’m turning off the comments for this one, but feel free to go back and have your say at the originals, found here and here. I should have done this sooner, but I’m on the road, helping my step-daughter get [...]

Star-News to City Council: Come Clean

Like the Star-News, I’ve been reticent to publish rumors about the South Pas City Council. Even though I posted in February that Dan Watson’s departure was tied to a move to make Joe Payne chief of police. But with the council’s recent Brown Act missteps, it’s fair to say that a number of residents echo [...]

Joe Payne Is the New Chief

The Star-News said it was probably gonna happen, and I heard the City Council announced it tonight: Joe Payne replaces Dan Watson as chief of the South Pasadena Police Department. Tweet

Catching Up 08.23.10

Some stuff I’ve neglected after the jump. It’s worth it for the last item. Tweet

Chief Concerns: Two Finalists Confirmed

South Pas Reserve Officer Joe Payne and former Maywood Police Chief Frank Hauptmann both confirmed they’re finalists to fill Dan Watson’s shoes. There’s plenty about Payne here, but I haven’t mentioned Hauptmann before. Besides the video above, here are a couple stories floating around: Four Maywood officers allege retaliation for exposing departmental misconduct. The L.A. Times [...]

City Attorney Rings a Bell

The Pasadena Star-News points out that Bell City Attorney Edward Lee, who signed off on the outrageous city salaries we’ve all been hearing about, once worked for South Pasadena. Via the story: Lee has worked in the San Gabriel Valley for several years. From 1990 to 1996 he was the city attorney in South Pasadena until [...]

Q&A With Outgoing Chief Dan Watson

Dan Watson’s run as chief of the South Pasadena Police Department comes to an end on July 1, and a few days later he starts as interim chief of the Mammoth Lakes Police Department. I wanted to ask him a few questions, and he was nice enough to answer them. The full Q&A is after [...]

Change of Venue for Chief’s Shindig*

The ever-vigilant Mister Earl tipped me off to the change of venue. Via his email: It has now been moved to the War Memorial building due to some sentiment that it should be held within the city. This, which appeared in the Star-News today, apparently fueled the fire: “Maybe it wasn’t their brand of sauce, [...]

Sending Off the Chief With a Real Barn Burner**

Save the date. Via the Star-News: South Pasadena Police Chief Dan Watson will be honored during a goodbye party from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Barn Burner Texas Barbeque Restaurant, 1000 South Fair Oaks Avenue, Pasadena. Three things about the story: It doesn’t mention the date (June 30 per the city editor); I think [...]

School Budget Rally Today

This is part of the statewide “Day of Action” to protest cuts to education. District Superintendent Joel Shapiro was sending out the robocalls yesterday. From the South Pasadena High School PTSA: South Pasadena Council PTA Invites You to a Rally for Our Children Thursday, March 4, from 3-4 p.m., in front of the SPUSD Administration Building: 1020 [...]
