About the Name

At one time, the Cawston Ostrich Farm was the most popular tourist destination in South Pasadena. The ostriches are long gone, but you can still see an old ostrich feeder on the north wall of Meridian Iron Works. Go check it out the next time you're at the Farmer's Market or hopping on the Gold Line. Get a hold of me here.

From the city: You are invited to attend an SR-710 Update Meeting hosted by the City of South Pasadena on Friday, Feb. 26, at the South Pasadena High School Auditorium. Registration will be from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Presentations will be followed by a question and answer period. [...]

Catching Up 02.16.10

A few of the South Pas-related items floating around in the news: In an obit for Frisbee inventor Walter Frederick Morrison, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune mentions in passing that WHAM-O began in a South Pasadena garage. Maybe you already knew that but, well, I didn’t. The L.A. Times says, “Today, Stargate (Studios) generates $15 [...]

The Elephant in the Room: Joe Payne*

*Aug. 19, 2020 update: The headline to this post always bugged me, so I finally went ahead and changed it today. It says what I tried to say with the previous head, but it’s less open to (mis)interpretation. *Update: I wouldn’t normally add the asterisk for a comment, but it’s only fair to draw attention [...]

Via the South Pas Chamber of Commerce: “Dr. Richard Schneider will be on hand for a Chamber of Commerce Book Launch and Meet ‘n Greet on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. Come one, come all to the Community Room in South Pasadena. There will be wine and cheese, mingling and a brief presentation by [...]

City: Watson Exit Not Set in Stone

Now that it’s become clear South Pas Police Chief Dan Watson has strong support from residents, city officials are having second thoughts about pushing him out the door, with City Manager John Davidson promising to make a decision independent from the council. Tweet

Chief Concerns

I hate playing catch up like this, and I have no one to blame but myself. A belated roundup of stories on Chief Dan Watson’s predicament after the jump. Tweet

What to Do With the City Yard?

Petting zoo? Shuttle lot for Trader Joe’s? Tiki bar? What would you like to see there? From the city: The City Council of South Pasadena is interested in receiving your input on the best use of the City-owned property at 825 Mission Street. This site is currently used as the City Yard housing the Public [...]

Election Results In*

I’ll update this as I notice changes, but the early results don’t say enough to pontificate. Keep in mind there are more than 15,000 registered voters in South Pas. I’m sure turnout wasn’t huge, but let’s assume that more than 10% of us cared enough to mark a ballot. *Updated: The numbers below now reflect [...]

Don’t Forget to Vote

Tomorrow is the day. Incumbents Philip Putnam and Michael Cacciotti are defending their South Pas City Council seats against newcomer Bill Sherman. And then there’s the Measure L library tax. I’ll post results when I can, but here’s hoping the South Pasadena Review — having paid employees and all — can beat me to the [...]

710: Now What?

With the potty-mouthed governor’s veto of Gil Cedillo’s bill, and the scrapping of a lawsuit that would have forbid Measure R dollars from funding the 710 tunnel, there’s not much for South Pas city officials to celebrate lately. Streetsblog L.A. (in a good roundup) points out that representatives of the city were predicting a victory [...]
