About the Name

At one time, the Cawston Ostrich Farm was the most popular tourist destination in South Pasadena. The ostriches are long gone, but you can still see an old ostrich feeder on the north wall of Meridian Iron Works. Go check it out the next time you're at the Farmer's Market or hopping on the Gold Line. Get a hold of me here.

Crime Report 07.08.10

Slow week for the police report. In other crime news:

Via the Star-News: “Police learned Friday that the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office plans to charge (18-year-old Nancy) Diaz with a misdemeanor count of furnishing alcohol to a minor in connection with the Dec. 12, 2009 party, the detective said.” That’s the party where SPHS [...]

Catching Up 06.10.10

Time for the occasional roundup. It’s after the jump.

Out of Office

I’ll be away from the computer for the next couple weeks. Here are a few nuggets to pass the time:

The Highland Park Heritage Trust is asking Caltrans to stop all that construction on the 110.
The Eclectic Music Festival & Art Walk will have oh-so-hip food trucks. Phew. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like [...]

School Budget Rally Today

This is part of the statewide “Day of Action” to protest cuts to education. District Superintendent Joel Shapiro was sending out the robocalls yesterday. From the South Pasadena High School PTSA:
South Pasadena Council PTA Invites You to a Rally for Our Children
Thursday, March 4, from 3-4 p.m., in front of the SPUSD Administration Building: 1020 El Centro [...]

40+ SPUSD Teachers to Receive Layoff Notices

The headline says it all. District Superintendent Joel Shapiro insists cuts would be greater if not for the parcel tax passed by voters last year. Here’s the Pasadena Star-News story.

Catching Up 03.01.10

A few South Pas-centric stories floating around:

Sometimes there’s a fine line between news and advertising. Sometimes that line gets trampled.
The death of SPHS student Aydin Salek prompts a bill proposal from Assemblyman Anthony Portantino that would “grant immunity from criminal prosecution to teenagers who seek emergency medical attention for someone possibly suffering from alcohol poisoning.”
State Assemblyman Mike Eng [...]

Local Kids Serenade Fullerton School Board

The ambiguously titled blog Friends for Fullerton’s Future reports that Fullerton School District Superintendent Mitch Hovey played this video at a recent school board meeting. The blog suggests it might have been used to float the idea of a parcel tax. One gem from the post: “Enjoy the manipulation of children by the same mindless [...]

Catching Up: The New Supe

I should have posted on this earlier, and by now it’s old news, but for what it’s worth … Joel Shapiro has been named to replace Brian Bristol as South Pasadena Unified School District’s superintendent. He spent 28 years in Glendale before hopping over to Burbank, where he spent the past five years as the [...]

SPUSD Warns of Impending Obama

Now that some conservatives have started to beat the drum of outrage over President Obama’s insidious plan to talk to the youth of America about, um, the importance of education, the South Pasadena Unified School District has sent out both an email and a robo-call warning parents. I guess this in case kids go to [...]

SPUSD Supe Search Update

Sorry, but this came when I was out enjoying the holiday weekend. The district has hired a headhunting firm to find a replacement for outgoing Superintendent Brian Bristol. There’s a public meeting tomorrow if you’d like to weigh in. Full e-mail after the jump.
