About the Name

At one time, the Cawston Ostrich Farm was the most popular tourist destination in South Pasadena. The ostriches are long gone, but you can still see an old ostrich feeder on the north wall of Meridian Iron Works. Go check it out the next time you're at the Farmer's Market or hopping on the Gold Line. Get a hold of me here.

A few of the South Pas-related items floating around in the news: In an obit for Frisbee inventor Walter Frederick Morrison, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune mentions in passing that WHAM-O began in a South Pasadena garage. Maybe you already knew that but, well, I didn’t. The L.A. Times says, “Today, Stargate (Studios) generates $15 [...]

The Elephant in the Room: Joe Payne*

*Aug. 19, 2020 update: The headline to this post always bugged me, so I finally went ahead and changed it today. It says what I tried to say with the previous head, but it’s less open to (mis)interpretation. *Update: I wouldn’t normally add the asterisk for a comment, but it’s only fair to draw attention [...]

What Happened?

So yeah, The Ostrich Feeder has been silent for over a month. There are a few decent reasons and a few lazy reasons, but the major culprit is Chantry Flat. Or, more accurately, Big Santa Anita Canyon. If you’ve ever hiked back there, you know there are more than 80 cabins sprinkled back in the [...]

The big news is, of course, the first homicide in South Pas in three years. The victim has been identified as Noe Martinez-Quinone, 35, of Guatemala. Full police report after the jump. Tweet

Don’t Forget to Vote

Tomorrow is the day. Incumbents Philip Putnam and Michael Cacciotti are defending their South Pas City Council seats against newcomer Bill Sherman. And then there’s the Measure L library tax. I’ll post results when I can, but here’s hoping the South Pasadena Review — having paid employees and all — can beat me to the [...]

From the release: Kinsey Elizabeth Stuart, 18, resides in South Pasadena and is studying psychology in her first year at Pasadena City College (PCC). In high school she [...]

The L.A. Times has the best map (pictured above) I’ve seen, as they continue to update the Station Fire’s perimeter. The Pasadena [...]

I’ll be away from my computer for the next couple weeks. South Pas fashion designer Richard Tyler decided the best way for Scientologists to overcome their sinister image is to have them wear black capes and sorting hats. Our firefighters were among those battling the blaze off the 134. Us and them: “I think the [...]

The scariest thing this week is the swine flu outbreak in South Pas. Or at least that’s what knocked me down for a few days. I think. Maybe I was just sick. Police report after the jump. Tweet

Crime Report 07.22.09

A nightmare of mine is being asleep when the bad guys break in. Yikes. And here’s some words of wisdom: When the parking officer asks you to move your car, just move your car. Yelling and almost hitting the parking officer … you’re kind of asking for it. Full report after the jump. Tweet
