About the Name

At one time, the Cawston Ostrich Farm was the most popular tourist destination in South Pasadena. The ostriches are long gone, but you can still see an old ostrich feeder on the north wall of Meridian Iron Works. Go check it out the next time you're at the Farmer's Market or hopping on the Gold Line. Get a hold of me here.

Crime Report 09.29.10

Today’s police report marks the first with Police Chief Joe Payne’s name at the top. A 65-year-old woman exits the Gold Line and a juvenile throws her into the bushes and starts beating on her. They catch the kid, but that doesn’t make it any less disturbing. Full report after the jump. Tweet

In Their Own Words: Joseph Payne and Mike Ten

Because I think they warrant it, I’m reposting a couple of comments from recent posts. I’m turning off the comments for this one, but feel free to go back and have your say at the originals, found here and here. I should have done this sooner, but I’m on the road, helping my step-daughter get [...]

Star-News to City Council: Come Clean

Like the Star-News, I’ve been reticent to publish rumors about the South Pas City Council. Even though I posted in February that Dan Watson’s departure was tied to a move to make Joe Payne chief of police. But with the council’s recent Brown Act missteps, it’s fair to say that a number of residents echo [...]

Joe Payne Is the New Chief

The Star-News said it was probably gonna happen, and I heard the City Council announced it tonight: Joe Payne replaces Dan Watson as chief of the South Pasadena Police Department. Tweet

Chief Concerns: Two Finalists Confirmed

South Pas Reserve Officer Joe Payne and former Maywood Police Chief Frank Hauptmann both confirmed they’re finalists to fill Dan Watson’s shoes. There’s plenty about Payne here, but I haven’t mentioned Hauptmann before. Besides the video above, here are a couple stories floating around: Four Maywood officers allege retaliation for exposing departmental misconduct. The L.A. Times [...]

The Elephant in the Room: Joe Payne*

*Aug. 19, 2020 update: The headline to this post always bugged me, so I finally went ahead and changed it today. It says what I tried to say with the previous head, but it’s less open to (mis)interpretation. *Update: I wouldn’t normally add the asterisk for a comment, but it’s only fair to draw attention [...]
